Tamaflu

Tamiflu is the recognized drug recommended by CDC as an effective form of Swine Flu or H1N1 flu medication.  It is also known as Oseltamivir and is an antiviral that treats disorders caused by viruses.

Indications

Tamiflu is recommended for flu viruses (both influenza A and influenza B.)
The drug also eases the symptoms that accompany flu like cough, headache, fever, sore throat etc. Tamiflu could prevent the flu onset even if the patient has been exposed to someone who suffers from it.

Intake Guidelines

You should take Tamiflu at least five days  and you must not stop even if you feel better. If you are using the oral suspension, you must accurately measure your doses of the drug in order to prevent any overdose. The bottle should be well shaken before used and check the expiration date of the drug. Tamiflu is not a stomach irritant, so you can take it without eating first but it is best to take after food.

Dosage

In the case of the  H1N1 influenza treatment, the correct dosage of Tamiflu is:

  • 75 mg of the drug for adults (twice a day from 1 to 5 days)
  • 30-75 mg of the drug for children (twice a day from 1 to 5 days). The correct dose of Tamiflu depends on the patient’s body weight.
  • The correct dose of the drug for children should be set by a pediatrician.

In the case of influenza’s prophylactic treatment, the dosage is:

  • 75 mg of Tamiflu for adults (once a day, from 1 to 7 days
  • The correct dose of the drug for children should be set by a pediatrician.

Tamiflu Warnings

You should inform your doctor if you are allergic to any of the drug’s components. Tamiflu has caused birth defects when tested on pregnant animals (it hasn’t been tested on pregnant women). It is advisable that a nursing mother should consult a doctor before starting a treatment with the drug. If you are suffering from any of the following disorders, inform your doctor beginning a treatment of Tamiflu:

  • Kidney ailments
  • Heart problems
  • Viral infections besides influenza A / B
  • Liver diseases
  • Lung Problems
  • Other important medical problems

Tamaflu Missed Dose

You should not miss any of their Tamiflu doses. However, if a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as possible, provided that it is not time for the next Tamiflu dose. You must not take a double dose of Tamiflu, or two doses of the drug separated by less than two hours from one another.

Tamaflu Side Effects

A Tamiflu treatment can result in several side effects such as:

  • Cough
  • Wheezing
  • Phlegm production
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach upsets & cramps
  • Nosebleed (this occurs most commonly in the case of children)
  • Eye itching & redness
  • Eye swelling and sometimes an excessive tear production
  • Skin flushing
  • Insomnia

You could experience other side effects of Tamiflu and if intolerable should stop their Tamiflu treatment and get their doctor’s advice.

Tamaflu Drug Reactions

As usual, you should inform your doctor if you are taking any other drugs besides Oseltamivir. Tamiflu normally reacts with other drugs that contain Probenecid among their ingredients. The combination of Tamiflu with these other drugs that contain Probenecid normally results in higher blood levels.
